SAMA Bursaries & Scholarships

SAMA MEDICAL EDUCATION BURSARY

SAMA is a non-profit company and utilises sponsorships and donations to fund medical student bursaries, scholarships for PhDs and Research Masters students. Our Corporate Affairs Department has embarked on a marketing drive to secure funding for bursaries. We are happy to announce that bursaries and scholarships will commence in 2024. Watch this space for timelines and application forms.

SAMA RESEARCH MASTERS SUPPLEMENTARY SCHOLARSHIP

The SA Medical Association wishes to encourage postgraduate research in the medical field, specifically with a view to promoting research and development in medicine for medical doctors in South Africa.  SAMA is therefore proud to offer the SAMA Research Masters Supplementary Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded on merit to the successful applicant who must be a South African citizen and a medical graduate of any university in South Africa who has started their Research Masters study one year prior to the application for this scholarship as the SAMA Bursary Committee also consider the progress made during the candidate’s first year of research. 

This excludes the Professional Masters degree such as the Masters in Medicine done as a requirement for specialist training.  Preference will be given to SAMA members. The main selection criteria are the academic quality of the research proposal and the suitability of the project for the SA environment.  The value of the Supplementary Scholarship amounts to R50 000 disbursed equally over two years.  

SAMA PHD SUPPLEMENTARY SCHOLARSHIP

The SA Medical Association wishes to encourage postgraduate research in the medical field, specifically with a view to promoting research and development in medicine for medical doctors in South Africa.   SAMA is therefore proud to offer the SAMA PhD Supplementary Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded on merit to the successful applicant who must be a South African citizen and a graduate (MBChB or equivalent degree) of a university in South Africa who has started their PhD study one year prior to applying for this scholarship as the SAMA Bursary Committee will also consider the progress made during the candidate’s first year of the PhD study.  

Preference will be given to SAMA members. The main selection criteria is the academic quality of the research proposal and the suitability of the project for South Africa’s research programme.  The value of the Supplementary Scholarship amounts to R100 000 as well as the candidate’s tuition fee for the relevant year.
